20 More Days in the CTM...(but who is counting?)
So I bet that all of you are really interested in how I am doing and all, so here it goes. I am doing really well actually. Last Friday we had our first tracking session. My companion and I passed out 3 copies of the Book of Mormon in less than an hour. We are super good, although he did more of the talking than I am. I need to practice talking more, but the language is coming along fine. I am not worried. It will come, on the Lord´s time, and I cannot ask to have it move quicker than I am able to learn.
Sorry Aly, Amy, and Eyrnn, I still have not gotten anything from you guys yet by way of mail. There has been a postal worker strike starting last week, but we are getting mail still. I am sure I will get it in a couple of days. Although Amy your package might not come before I leave. Packages take a long while to get down here. The quickest I´ve seen it has been 17 days and the longest I´ve ever seen it was more than 20 days, but I am sure it will get too me.
Seth, how is your new job coming? Oh wait, you have not started it yet, but when it does let me know. I am dying to find out. We had another Milestone, this time it was teaching the third lesson in English. Now we are working on the commandments in English. I don´t know how well I will be prepared for when I leave the CTM in 20 days, but everyone says that you learn more in the first 6 weeks than you do in the whole of time in the CTM, so I am not worried. I just hope that I get a Brazilian how knows a enough English that I can ease the transition. Like my friend Marcio, He is down in Santa Maria and I hope I have him as my trainer.
I got letters from Curty James, and Jamesy Curt. Those were really nice to get. They really made my day. I hope that you guys are doing well. And Curt I thank you for your letter in Portuguese. I could read most of it and I had to look up some of the words. But I understood most of it. I was trying to translate it verbatim, but I really just do not have the time in the CTM.
I ran out of deodorant and tooth past this week, right now I smell bad, but I bought some. It is kind of bad, they do not have stick deodorant here in Brazil just the spray kind. AXE is huge here. Every Brazilian has it. I am oh well, I am going to be alright. I am just going have to do the double-pits-to-chesty thing everyday. I feel like such a dork.
We started a new grammatical lesson on Monday. Present Subjunctive. We do not use it really every anymore in English. An example is God commands you that you keep His commandments. It is the hypothetical tenses, and it is really difficult and the Brazilians use it all the time; we also still have to do the past subjunctive and the future subjunctive. I understand how to write it, but with everything else I have trouble with speaking it, but I will get it one of these days. 4 months from now I wont be able to speak English very well, that is my prediction.
Also if you guys would not mind could you send me some English grammar books and Portuguese for dummies. I want something that I can practice everyday Portuguese instead of the gospel vocabulary only. It says in Preach My Gospel that the Lord expects you go gain a secular command of the Language as well as spiritual, and thus far there has not been anything given to me to learn that. I am also expected to help teach my Brazilian companions English hence the English Grammar books. I would be forever in your debt who ever would send it to me. I would send to the Mission Home In Santa Maria.
The Days are counting down and the time to go to the field is drawing near. I thank God everyday for this fact. I have not been so happy for anything more in my life.
Last Wednesday, I was asked to prepare the prelude music for Yesterdays devotional. My district and I sang I Know That My Redeemer Lives, I Will Go Where You Want Me To Go, and Abide With Me Tis Even Tide. I got to solo on I know My Redeemer Lives and I sang a duet with one of the Sisters in my District on Abide With Me Tis Even Tide. It was great. I felt the Spirit so abundantly that I got shivers to be honest.
Today was great. I got to eat lunch with one of my Instructors Irmão Melo. My District and I with Melo went to a Churrascaria, which is a Brazilian Barbecue place. One of the first things that my instructor had me eat ,without me knowing what it was, was coração de galhna or in English chicken hearts. I have to admit it was the best things I had there. It is an all you can eat meat fest. They come out with meat on sticks and cut off pieces of it right in front of you and it is great. I am so full and it was good. Food baby. Although I might have gained back all the weight that I´ve lost which brings me to the new total. 15 pounds. I am down to 177 from 192.
I am going on strong I ran a mile in 8 minutes and 57 seconds, which is my fastest time ever. Even when I was fit and doing marching band. I am so pleased with my self.
Well I have got to be going now. I love you all and I hope that I get to hear from you. Oh and Britteny Peterson I just want to say congratulations on the little guy, and that last trimester doesn´t get you too down.
And Mom, I want to thank you. Your letters keep coming every week with out fail and it is such a good feeling to know that you are always there for me, as well as everyone else for that matter. You like me, you really like me.
Sincerely Your Son, Brother, and Your Friend,
Elder Caleb Spencer Carriere.
PS. Happy Late Birthday Melanie.

Keep the Letters Coming...
Dear Family and Friends,
How is everyone doing? I would love to hear from you all in letter form. It makes the days just that more exciting, but e-mails are good too, not going to lie. Wednesdays are my favorite days because of the e-mails I get to read. Like for instance I got an email from Nick Floyd. See classy my friend, also it is sad news that the you sold the Mini Bus. Oh the memories.... life will go on.
As for my illness I am doing a lot better. I went to the doctor yesterday and got some antibiotics. I love the names of the medicines here; it is a pack of three pills and the names of the pills are called Astro. It is some Brazilian medication. It seems to be working so because everything is getting better.
I got your letter Mom that you mailed on the 2nd of this month, and I want to say do not worry I am eating 3 times a day, and I normally do not skip meals. I will admit when I was feeling worse than I am now I skipped a couple of meals because looking at it made me sick, but I am feeling better now. The trick is I am working out 5 times a week with out fail. Although this last week since I was sick I skipped a day or two. Also the rain did not help. It rained all the time, and I think it was last Thursday or Friday there were a lot of power outages here. Although the generators at the CTM work just fine so I was never without lights for more than a minute.
The test went well. My companion and I knocked it out of the Park. He is picking up the language much faster than I am, but I am giving it my all and I can get my message across so I am not worried one bit. This Friday we are going tracking for the first time. We go around Casa Verde and give the street contact lesson and try to hand out copies of the Book of Mormon. Oh sorry Casa Verde is the name of the neighborhood that the CTM is in. I think I am going to do well. But all the same wish me luck.
I Love P-day. I was able to go to the Temple again. I really love it there. It is so calm and peaceful. It is really kind of crazy too considering it faces one of the most busy streets in São Paulo, and the level of noise is great, but once you enter through the doors you cannot hear anything from the outside world. It is remarkable.
I was also able to go to the Distribution Center there, and I bought a couple of the Triple combination Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price in Portuguese. It is a nice red polished leather, much like mom and dads. I also picked up a copy of Jesus the Christ in Portuguese. I am not able to understand it now, but I figure I will by the end of my mission. I am going to try to print off my pictures and then send the SD card to Alyson so she can upload the pictures on to the Blog.
On Second thought one of my roommates just read about a pending postal strike in Brazil, so maybe... I will try anyway. I am sure you all want to see me.
Well guys, that is me in a nutshell. I am doing well, and better than last week. Oh I almost forgot I lost a total of 12 pounds the last time I looked and that was last week so I might be skinnier than that now. I hope so. I was finally just at 180 from 192.
We are also working on the third lesson in English. Then next week I believe it will be the 2nd in Portuguese. I am loving it.
I love you all, and I thank you for your love and support.
Sincerely,
Elder Caleb S. Carriere

Week Five
Hey Family,
Sorry this has be fast. The computers here ancient and My time is running short. I have been sick this past week. There is an illness going around the CTM. If someone would WebMD the symptoms and send them back to me that would be great. I have a bad cough and soar throat and when I cough, I cough up yellow gunk. I also have a stuffed up nose with the same colored gunk.
Today was a good day. I was able to go to the Campinas Temple, which is about an hour and a half away north of São Paulo. It is so beautiful there. I have pictures, but I cannot send them via email. I will mail Aly the SD card soon however. The temple sits on top of a hill just out side the Campinas city limits, and you can overlook the city from the grounds, it is really one of the prettier temples I have been to.
I have lost a total of 11 pounds since I started at the CTM. I am loving it. I feel great besides being sick out of my mind. I also forgot to tell you I had my AP and my DL give me a blessing and I am starting to feel a lot better I am not coughing nearly as much as I was the night before.
My district and I are starting the learn the first lesson in Portuguese. I am doing well, but we are going to be tested over it on Saturday so keep me in your thoughts and prayers that day.
Other than that nothing is new for me. I will talk to you all later. Love your favorite Elder,
Elder Caleb S. Carriere
Top of the Morning to ya...
Dear Family and Friends,
I am doing well. I love it here in the CTM, although I have been having a tough time. I have been working a lot and the language is coming, although not as fast as I had hoped, but everyone says that after this week it will take off like a rocket. I have lost 9 pounds since I entered 3 weeks ago. Do not worry about me Mom I am eating a lot; I have been working out 50 minutes five times a weeks. I am losing it the correct and healthy way.
Like I said I was having a difficult time, nothing that would keep me from striving to do the work which I have been called to do, but I felt lonely in heart. Having prayed a great deal I received an answer while at Sunday School class. Our Branch president, President Van Orman, quoted scripture from 1 Nephi 20:10 which states, ´´I have refined thee, I have chosen thee from the furnace of affliction.`` I knew right then all the lonely feelings which I had been feeling were only to create me into something better than I was at the time, and those feelings went away and I was filled with great feelings of joy. Like the millstone that was around my neck came off.
On a more lighter not I did make a huge mistake with the language the other day to answer Erynn´s question. While in line for food they were serving chicken so I was excited because the chicken here is some of the best I have every had. I yelled out Galhna!!! (I am not sure if I spelled that correctly) then said to the lunch lady duas galhnas por favor!! Galhna is a live chicken to come find out, and in Brazil calling a woman a galhna is like calling her the village bike or a slut, so I asked for two sluts. The cooked meat of a chicken is frango. I know now not to make that mistake twice.
Also to answer your question Seth, Elder Sam Matthews in my roommate. He is a great guy. Funny, full of life, well that was until he got sick and has been pretty miserable other wise, but he is feeling much better. I have never felt better physically. The guy I work out with is Elder Kayma. We call him the flyin' Hawaiian. He was studying to be come a work out trainer or something to the effect and he works me out hard. I feel great.
Alyson, so your new car is cute... how fun. I hope you really like it. I sure you a Kris are loving it. I would have thought you were going to get a minivan or something like that.
I would love to get letter from you all. They are nice and make the days a whole lot better. Also you can send me stuff to the CTM. Just not after my 6th week here. There is a good chance by the time it get down here I will be in Santa Maria. That day cannot come soon enough.
Dad, thank you for fixing my car. I hope you two are getting along. The city is huge. It is a great contrast of prospective's. The rich and the poor live with one another. Their housing bump. Tall rich apartment towers next to shanty towns. The traffic is the worst I have every seen, but everyone is so friendly about it. People wave each other in all the time. No one is ever nasty or mean about being cut off. It is a weird system which works well.
Today I had to go visit the police to register with them as a legal foreigner.
The São Paulo temple is beautiful. It is in the middle of the city almost. There is a large gate around it. It also shares the same plot of land as a stake center and Church Head Quarters in South America. They call Brazil the Second Nation of the Church because there are more members here than anywhere else save it be America.
The food is good. More or Less anyway.
Again I love you all, I miss you, but I know what I am doing is something worth while on a grand prospective which cannot be denied.
Love always,
Elder Caleb S. Carriere.
ps Eyrnn I do remember being taped to the box. I giggle every time I see that picture.
pps Seth Forward this email to all the family if you would. Also tell everyone in the ward that I love them and I got some of there letters I am assuming there are more to come.
psss. I will have to mail you guys the photos they are not wanting to load onto the computer. They will be forth coming.

6 pounds lighter...
Dear Family and Friends...
How are things going with you? Everything is going well here in Sao Paulo. It is my 3rd week since I entered the CTM and I really still love it. I am enjoying every minute of it. It has been difficult adjusting to the life style of a missionary but I know that I will be bless for doing so. I hope that you guys got my letter and the email that was sent by the MTC presidency. If not here I am safe and sound.
I am doing well. The flight was long and I did not sleep much so by the time that I went to bed the next night I had been in the same suit for 36 plus hours. But right from the git go I know that this is where the Lord wants me to be and I know that I am doing a good work and I cannot come down for anything.
My companion and I get alone just fine. My companion is Elder Evan Hyde. He is from Smithville UT, which is right outside of Logan. He is really great. I love the kid to death. He is excited about the gospel and I know we can do a lot of good together. We have our rough moments, but nothing that is difficult to manage and comes from being around someone for every waking moment of ones day.
I am in class almost 10 hours a day. I am learning a lot about the gospel and the language. Although my companion and I have found out we do not know the language nearly as well as we thought we did. Which is sad because we are the stars of the language in our district. But I digress, it is the Lord humbling me for my vanity. I spend most of my day in class learning from Preach My Gospel and learning Portuguese. Both are coming alone well. Although it was nice today being able to get out of CTM and visit the temple, and wonder the streets of São Paulo. Do not worry mom, I am only a few blocks away from the CTM. I am sitting in an internet shop writing this email.
I have lost 6 pounds since entering the CTM. My pants are really lose on me. I am eating well most of the time. Some of the food is either hit or miss, but alot of it has been really good. Oh well, such is life.
I love the Brazilian culture and people. I have made a lot of Brazilian friends. There is a elder two doors down from us, and he is a crack up. His name is Elder Sousa. His first name is Caio. He has been helping my companion and I learn the language and we've been teaching him English which he knows a lot already.
I love it here. I am truly bless of the Lord for being here.
thank you for your love and support of me coming here and serving the Lord.
Sincerely,
Elder Caleb S. Carriere
P.S. Unless you guys object I will only email you guys. I can only email my family and the cost of postage limits me. I will have ´pictures next time.

Frist Letter Home
Dear Mom & Dad,
I am alive and well in the MTC. I really love it here thus far, but don't quote me on that just yet. I have only been here for about 5 hours or so. My Companion is great. His name is Elder Hyde. He is from Logan, Utah. We seem to get along well. My roommates are really great as well. So far, there are 4 of us in our dorm room, but I've been told I should expect a Brazilian Companionship.
I am loving it and I am glad that i made the choice to go. The view from my room is great. I can see the Sao Paulo skyline as well as the rest of the MTC. I am on the 6th Floor, which is the top floor, room 613
The food is alright, nothing special thus far, but I've been told that today isn't the best day for food.
I will write you again soon. So, until then, Goodnight, God Bless and have a pleasant tomorrow.
Love Elder Caleb S. Carriere
